查强博士是加拿大约克大学教育学院副教授（终身教职），研究生部主任，兼任多伦多大学教育领导、高等教育和成人教育系博士生导师。查强博士，担任天津大学教育学院兼职教授，同时受聘天津大学大学文化与校史研究所特聘研究员。他还担任复旦大学高等教育研究所兼职研究员（2005-）、南京师范大学兼职教授（2009-）、安徽省人民政府发展研究中心特约研究员（2006-）、清华大学“伟伦特聘访问教授”（2012-2013）和《中国教育学前沿》共同编辑。查强博士于多伦多大学安大略教育研究院获得高等教育学博士学位，伦敦大学教育学院获得比较教育学硕士（优等）学位。他的研究领域包括中国和东亚高等教育、国际学术关系、国际人才流动、高等教育国际化、全球化与教育、高等教育多样化与多样性、组织变迁理论、知识转移与产业化，以及加拿大和其它地方高等院校的（产学）合作教育。他的学术文章大量发表于高等教育和比较教育领域的国际学术刊物，包括《比较》、《高等教育》、《高等教育政策》、《欧洲高等教育》、《哈佛中国评论》等。2004年，他作为共同获奖者获得了首届联合国教科文组织国际大学协会与Palgrave出版机构设立的高等教育政策研究奖。

Situated in the context of challenges facing liberal arts education in Chinese universities, this paper explores (1) What is the major challenge now facing liberal arts education at Chinese universities? (2) Should an effective or ideal liberal arts education evolve with time and context? If yes, what needs to be taken into account in the 21st century at Chinese universities and elsewhere? (3) How do we define an effective or ideal liberal arts education now at Chinese universities and elsewhere? Or, what does a 21st-century liberal arts education look like? Employing the German concept of Bildung as a guiding framework, it concludes that a 21st-century liberal arts education for universities in China and elsewhere needs to absorb meta changes and movements in society at home and around the world, while ideally rooted in a knowledge tradition. Hence it would comprise three essential elements: humanist education, cognitive education, and global education.
